One thing that has always bothered me during my career is the general misconception that central air conditioning systems use Freon. Your central air conditioner does not use Freon, it circulates Freon. If your air conditioning system is low on Freon, you have a Freon leak. You should never have to add Freon to your central air conditioner. Freon (Puron, R410a, R22) is not something that needs to be replenished by a couple of pounds each year and during a maintenance check the Freon levels are verified, but adding Freon is not part of normal maintenance for an air conditioner or heat pump. Freon is what conveys the lubrication for the wall of compressor in the outdoor condensing unit. Failure to maintain the oil levels in that compressor and running the central air conditioning is like running your car engine with no oil in the crankcase.
