Econo Air
On May 21, 2003, my husband and I purchased from Econo Air two Lennox gas furnaces and two central air conditioning units. At the time of purchase, we also bought an Econo Air Extended 10-year Warranty for $790. The extended warranty covers us for parts and labor for all repairs. A year later in May 2004, we were told by Econo Air in order to validate the 10-year warranty, we must hire Econo Air to change the Aprilaire filter once a year and in addition, every year we must pay for a 10-point service. The Aprilaire filter would be included as part of the 10-point service and the cost would be $109. Since we have two systems, the cost would be $218 per year. And because we are required to do this every year for 10 years, it would cost us a total of $2,180 to keep the 10- year extended warranty! Yes
Our salesman, Bob Melendez, never told us orally or in writing about the maintenance requirement. He even told us at the time of purchase that we could buy the filters at Home Depot and change it ourselves. We found out recently that this was untrue because the Aprilaire filters are only available through Lennox for $38 + shipping. We never signed a contract stating that we had to do an annual 10-point check. The contract simply states,'System filters must be changed annually -- Does not include annual 10 point service.'
The contract did not say that we couldn't change the filter by ourselves, nor does it say that we must do an annual 10-point service. No where in the contract does it say that we would void our 10-year extended warranty if don't hire Econo Air to do the filters and the 10-point service.
On June 15, 2004, we spoke to Gilbert Ochoa, a representative of Econo Air over the phone. At first he stated that he would allow us to change our own filters and that we could hire another Authorized Lennox Repairman to do the maintenance. He told us to save the paperwork to prove that we did the maintenance. I thought to myself that I could save some money by doing that. But then he said, "You'll be surprised that the other companies aren't cheap either, so you'll wind up coming back to us." That statement made me think that the alternative may not solve my problem because it seemed that it would wind up costing us more.
When I asked him to put the alternative in writing, he refused and said he needed to speak to the General Manager first and that he would get back to me in a couple of days. It has now been almost 6 weeks and he still has not contacted us. Gilbert Ochoa's company cell phone number is (714)720-6886. The general number for Econo Air is (714)630-3090. I was told that the owner of the company is Mike Richards. I believe that this is a case of fraud and that they must cheat many of their customers. I think a fair resolution would be for them to charge me half price for the 10-point service. Instead of paying $109 each year, I would pay $54 each year for each system.

Incompetent, inept, unscupulous liars BEWARE!

Company sent inept techicians to diagnose what was wrong with my airconditioner in the middle of a heat wave. The technician said it needed a blower and said the company would call me to schedule an appt to come back with the correct part and fix it. The diagnosis was $89. The company never called to schedule the appt. They told me over and over that the part would be in soon. Two weeks later after no airconditioning I had my husband call as a last resort before calling another company, miraculously they said the part was in and a tech would come between noon and 5:00 the next day. I cancelled work to stay home. I was desperate by this point. At 5:30, a half hour past the window, a tech called me from the road lost. I started giving directions to my house. He was frustrated and said, "Now why am I coming there?" I calmly said. "YOU HAVE A PART TO INSTALL THAT I"VE WAITED TWO WEEKS FOR." He said "I don't have any part. They didn't tell me about any part." I hung up, called Adie and they had a man here the next day who fixed my airconditioner in less than 3 hours. Econo Air still charged me the $89 for that initial diagnosis in which they themselves finally admitted their tech hadn't written down the serial number for the part needed and so they couldn't use the information collected on that diagnosis. But they refused to refund me for the worthless diagnosis. They proceded to lie on the business agency complaint report and say I turned the man with the correct part away at my door! This company is completely unscrupulous. BEWARE!!!
